Improving Alberta's health system

Health spending, including health capital support, will top $10 billion in 2006-07, about 37 per cent of the entire provincial budget.

Health and Wellness operating spending increases 7.5 per cent in 2006-07.

Highlights include:

  • Increase of $338 million for base operating funding to health authorities, a 6 per cent increase.
  • $748 million will be spent on health capital, including $672 million in capital grants to health authorities.
  • $42 million to improve continuing care through changes such as increasing the number of nursing hours and personal care in long-term facilities, and to increase therapy, implement new health care standards and improve case co-ordination.
  • $27 million will be spent in 2006-07 to address wait times for selected surgeries and procedures.
  • Enhanced subsidies for health care insurance premiums to benefit over 140,000 Albertans.
