The Employment Standards Branch offers education seminars to interested individuals and groups on the British Columbia Employment Standards Act and Regulation. Seminars may be at an introductory or more detailed level and can be delivered at workplaces or community locations.
General topics include:
- Basic employment standards and rights and responsibilities of employers and employees.
- The difference between “employee” and ”independent contractor”.
- The definition of "manager” under the Act.
- Wage rates, paying wages, wage statements and record keeping.
- Allowable deductions from wages.
- Hours of work and overtime rules.
- Time banks and averaging agreements.
- Statutory holidays and annual vacation pay.
- Other types of leaves from work, including pregnancy and parental leave.
- Termination of Employment: Notice or pay? Just cause or not? Quit?
- Available resources and information on the dispute resolution process.
Seminars can also be tailored to the issues of a specific group or sector. Please e-mail or call the ESB office nearest you for more details.
In addition, Employment Standards staff in some Regions have teamed with the Employers' Advisor (on Workers' Compensation) and Canada Revenue Agency (on Payroll) to present Introductory Seminars for Business in B.C.
