How does a caregiver access the Program

All potential applicants for the live-in caregiver program must apply to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) at a Canadian visa post outside of Canada.

This applies to applicants who are living:

  • Outside Canada
  • In Canada temporarily with Immigration status as a visitor, student, or as another category of foreign worker.

CIC may not process new applicants to the live-in caregiver program from within Canada.

Information regarding the criteria against which a caregiver will be assessed is contained in the section entitled Role of CIC.

What steps must a caregiver take to apply

The following table outlines the steps that a potential applicant must take in order to apply for a work permit from CIC under the live-in caregiver program.

1 The caregiver must obtain an Application for a work permit Government of Canada site from the Canadian visa post in their jurisdiction.
2 The caregiver must complete the Application for work permit and submit it to the Canadian visa post.
3 The caregiver must include the cost recovery fee.
4 The caregiver must include any additional documents requested by the visa post.

 

What does it cost to apply

A processing fee is payable when the application for work permit is submitted. Currently, the feel is $150 Canadian.

Methods and currencies of payment vary from country to country and are in large part dependent on local banking practices in the host countries.

How will CIC process the application

The following table outlines the steps in the process that will be followed by CIC when processing the caregiver's application for a work permit.

Step Action
1 An Immigration Officer at a visa post will determine if the caregiver meets the criteria for the live-in caregiver program by assessing the caregiver against the program criteria.
2 CIC will issue instructions for a medical assessment to the caregiver if it is determined that they meet the program criteria.
3 CIC will assess the caregiver against all other Immigration requirements after the Immigration medical assessment is passed. These requirements include provisions relating to:
  • Identity
  • Public safety
  • National security
4 The caregiver, in most cases, will be required to attend a personal interview at some point during the assessment process.

When will the work permit be issued

The following table outlines the steps that will be followed after CIC has approved the issuance of a work permit to a caregiver.

Step Action
1 An Immigration Officer will provide the caregiver with a Letter of Approval to present to an Immigration Officer at a Port of Entry in Canada once all of the assessment criteria are met.
2 An Immigration Officer will issue a Visitor Visa to the caregiver if the caregiver is a citizen of a country whose citizens require visas Government of Canada site for Canada. The visa will be affixed into the caregiver's passport.
3 The caregiver will have to present the following to an Immigration Officer at a Port of Entry upon arriving in Canada:
  • A valid passport
  • The Letter of Approval provided by the visa post
4 An Immigration Officer at the Port of Entry will issue a work permit to the caregiver.
