Merial - ISA - Hubbard-ISA - Shaver - Babcock - BUT - BUTA

ISA was founded in 1976 by grouping - through the Merieux Institute - the existing genetic potential of the two most important breeders in the French poultry industry - the Vedette (broiler breeders) and Isabrown (brown egg layers). Later on in 1981, the acquisition by ISA of the American firm Babcock Poultry Farms Inc. completed a basic plan of action for world-wide operations. Over the past few years ISA has gradually set up a network of 15 subsidiary companies in different areas of the world, namely, the United Kingdom, the U.S.A., Canada, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Brazil, Venezuela, Poland and Czechoslovakia. In the latter part of 1989, Canada's Shaver Poultry Breeding Farms Limited was acquired by ISA.

ISA's commercial program includes production of various broiler strains and laying strains of both white and brown eggs.

ISA, with its acquisitions, affiliations and subsidiary companies, now supplies over sixty five (65) percent of the world's brown-egg market, thirty five (35) percent of the world's white-egg market, and fifteen (15) percent of the world's broiler market.

For some years prior to 1997, ISA was a subsidiary of the multinational company - Rhône-Poulenc.

British United Turkeys (BUT),
an amalgamation of British breeders and research was incorporated in 1962. It was acquired in 1978 by Hubbard Farms a US primary breeder of layer and broiler breeds, which was itself a subsidiary of Merck Drugs Co. Inc.

In 1981 BUT established a US company British United Turkeys of America (BUTA) which develops its own lines and serves over 40% of the North American market.

In 1997 a new company - Merial Animal Health - came into effect through the joint efforts of Merck & Co. Inc and Rhône Poulenc. This brings together breeding lines from ISA, Babcock, Shaver, BUT and Hubbard to form the largest company in poultry genetics incorporating layer, broiler and turkey lines.
