September 21, 2005 MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT PUBLISHES PLANNING GUIDE
FOR ONTARIO’S CHINESE SENIORS TORONTO – The McGuinty government is providing Chinese-speaking seniors and their families with Chinese-language information needed to make decisions about their future care, Minister Responsible for Seniors, Jim Bradley, announced today. A Guide to Advance Care Planning is designed to help seniors and families of seniors to develop a plan should an elder become too ill to care for themselves. The Chinese version of the guide was launched today at the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care-Scarborough Finch Centre. “This handy booklet will help older Chinese-speaking Ontarians to make important medical and legal decisions about their care,” said Bradley. “The McGuinty government is pleased to serve the Chinese community by providing this useful information in Chinese.” “Making personal choices is very important to a senior’s sense of identity and well being. We are very pleased to have collaborated with the government to ensure the Chinese community has access to a wonderful resource on advance care planning,” said Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care Executive Director Amy Go. “The Chinese version of A Guide to Advance Care Planning is a great example of our ongoing efforts to develop culturally and linguistically sensitive publications to meet the needs of all Ontarians, said Linda Stebbins, Executive Director, The Alzheimer Society of Ontario. “We hope to build on our partnership with the Ontario government and the Chinese community. We’re also thrilled with the timing of this release. September 21 is World Alzheimer Day, with coffee/tea breaks being held across Canada.” There will initially be 10,000 copies printed, to
be distributed throughout the province and made available to seniors by
seniors’centres, organizations working with Chinese seniors, The
Alzheimer Society of Ontario and Advocacy Centre for the Elderly. . - 30 - Contacts:
