Land Registration Information

Real Property Registration Branch

The Real Property Registration Branch (RPRB) manages and operates 54 Land Registry Offices throughout Ontario which register, store and manage documents such as deeds, mortgages and plans of survey. Registration of real property is done under either the Land Titles Act or the Registry Act. All registered and deposited records are available to the public (for a fee) to search title or obtain information about the ownership of real property.

The province of Ontario is the first jurisdiction in the world to provide electronic registration of land-related documents. This innovative system is the result of a strategic alliance between the government and a private sector company, Teranet Inc. An implementation program to provide electronic registration of land-related documents in Ontario’s Land Registry Offices is currently underway across the province. For more information please refer to Electronic Land Registration. For further information on Teranet’s Teraview gateway software please refer to www.teranet.ca

Title and Survey Services Office

The Title and Survey Services Office is responsible for setting policy, procedures and standards for the registration of documents and plans in the land registration system. It also provides support to the land registry offices for resolution of complex legal and survey issues arising from the registration of documents and plans.

It is responsible for the land registration related statutes being the Land Titles Act, Registry Act, Land Registration Reform Act, Certification of Titles Act and the Boundaries Act and any amendments to them. The office also sets standards for the registration of documents under the Condominium Act.

In addition, the office deals with survey issues and applications under the Boundaries Act and the Certification of Titles Act and applications for first registration under the Land Titles Act.

Bulletins:

Bulletins contain information of a legal/technical nature and are disseminated to the land registrars and users of the land registration system, particularly the legal community. They address changes in procedures due to legislative or regulatory amendments or policy changes affecting the registration of documents and plans in the land registration system.

Bulletins dated prior to 1988 are available only in English (see Disclaimer). Users of the French portion of the site should note that only Bulletins from 1988 forward are available. For a complete listing please refer to the English index of the Bulletins.

Memos:

Memos are issued mainly to assist the Land Registry Offices and clients by clarifying a legal/technical procedure or registration issue. These procedures are issued in a memo format to put out information quickly.

Many of these memos are converted into bulletins and distributed to the land registrars and users of the land registration system. (see Disclaimer)
