regional cooperative development
The department and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of
Cooperatives announced a new partnership to advance the key priorities of a
new regional cooperative development strategy. The partnership will focus on
enhancing the development and promotion of the cooperative model to support
business growth in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Kathy
Dunderdale, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development have released a
discussion paper today and announced a consultation process designed to
solicit input into the development of an innovation strategy for Newfoundland

Province registers labour-sponsored venture capital fund
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced a labour-sponsored
venture capital fund has been registered to operate in the province. The
GrowthWorks Atlantic Venture Fund will be a new source of venture capital for
growing small and medium-sized enterprises in Newfoundland and Labrador,
particularly in new emerging areas of the economy for enterprises that have
good growth potential.

Minister Kathy Dunderdale today announced the
winner of the 20th Newfoundland and Labrador Export Award at a luncheon in St.
John’s. Mount Pearl-based ICAN, an international communications and navigation

Two EDGE Companies Announced Two Newfoundland and Labrador companies will receive support under the
department’s Economic Diversification and Growth Enterprises (EDGE) Program.
Beaufort Solutions Inc., St. John’s, provides photo kiosk software to
large resellers. H&H Enterprises, Wabush,
operates the only fabrication shop in Labrador West. Through EDGE
its operations will expand and diversify.

Industrial Research and Innovation Fund projects announced
Minister Kathy
Dunderdale in
conjunction with Dr. Axel Meisen, President and Vice-Chancellor of Memorial
University of Newfoundland, announced funding for 20 projects under the
Industrial Research and Innovation Fund. The goal of the fund is to enhance research and
industrial innovation within higher education and public research institutions. News

Canada Atlantic arrives in Washington for trade mission
A delegation of 27 Atlantic Canadian companies arrived in Washington, D.C. on
April 25 for a Team Canada Atlantic trade mission. Companies
participating in the trade mission met with key
decision-makers in a number of sectors including agrifoods, biotechnology,
building and construction, consumer products, and information and
communications technology.

Annual Community Economic Development
Awards presented
The province’s second annual Community
Economic Development Awards were presented in Port aux Basques by Industry,
Trade and Rural Development Minister Kelvin Parsons at a gala event on the
evening of October 19, 2002. The Department
has announced three finalists for each of six categories, in the second annual Community
Economic Development Awards.
Dimension
Stone Industry Workshop Training in dimension stone prospecting
techniques will be provided next week to a dozen professional prospectors in
Central Newfoundland. The Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development,
in partnership with the Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation, is
sponsoring the workshop. The workshop will run from October 8 -11, beginning in
Grand Falls-Windsor.
18th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards,
May 2002
In markets as far away as Japan,
Chile and the United Kingdom, Newfoundland and Labrador companies are proving
that they have the quality products and services to compete at an international
level. On May 29th, the Department of Industry, Trade and
Rural Development announced our province's Exporters of the Year.
These four
companies were honoured for their excellence in exporting goods and
services.
10th Annual Provincial Wholesale Craft Show (April)
The Department hosted the 10th Annual Provincial Wholesale Craft Show
in St. John’s on April 8th and 9th. The two-day event showcased 50 producers
from across the province. More than 100 retailers attended the show to network
and purchase locally made craft products for their retail stores. Products
represented at the event included dog leashes made of hemp, Innu tea dolls,
beeswax lip balm, hand-dyed silk ties, jalapeno jelly, pewter earrings,
handcrafted leather gloves and soapstone carvings, among others.
Craft Industry Development Strategy (February)
The federal and provincial governments announced a
new Craft Industry Development Strategy and new funding of $1 million over two
years for its implementation. The strategy is aimed at accelerating growth and
encouraging professionalism in the province’s craft industry.
