Cultural Program: General Eligibility Guidelines

Effective date: April 2007

The International Cultural Relations Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade provides grants to Canadian groups and individuals for the promotion of Canadian culture abroad. These are governed by general eligibility guidelines outlined below, which supersede all previous ones.

Applications will be accepted from professional artists and professionals in the cultural field who are Canadian citizens or resident in Canada and from not-for-profit arts or cultural organizations or institutions registered in Canada. All applicants should have undertaken a minimum of three years professional cultural activity in Canada. Special consideration in regards to this last requirement may be given to applications from Aboriginal Canadians and younger Canadian artists.

Grants may be awarded to individuals, institutions or organizations that create, interpret, promote or market Canadian cultural products for the international market in the following disciplines:

Grants will be awarded on the basis of relevance to Canadian foreign policy. The evaluation of applications will be based on artistic quality, fiscal responsibility, cost-effectiveness, Canadian content, length and variety of the proposed project and the relevance of the locations to Canada's current foreign and trade policy and, finally, the ability of the applicant to undertake an international project.

Grants will be awarded subject to the availability of funds and generally will cover the cost of international transportation or a part thereof, up to an amount equivalent to 30 per cent of the total project budget.

Conformity with these guidelines and the basic criteria does not guarantee funding.

Please see the specific guidelines for each discipline for application procedures and deadlines.
