Citizen Engagement Strategy

imageCanadians play an active role in public safety. Citizens are involved in Correctional Service Canada (CSC) operations on a daily basis. They attend outreach events, participate in consultations, volunteer at our institutions and community offices, as well as take part in our Advisory Committees.

In order to increase CSC's capacity to better engage Canadians, Citizen Engagement Branch developed, over the summer of 2006, a Citizen Engagement Strategy. This overarching strategy was developed in consultation with CSC's partners and stakeholders. Several groups such as the National Volunteer Association (NVA), the Citizens' Advisory Committees (CAC), the National Associations Active in Criminal Justice (NAACJ), had the opportunity to comment and contribute to its creation. Their involvement has been much appreciated and welcomed by CSC.

At the end of December 2006, the CSC's Executive Committee (EXCOM) approved the implementation of the strategy, which paves the way for the development of a coordinated national citizen engagement governance structure. The adoption of this strategy allows the development of sub-strategies and action plans that will establish coherent objectives, enhanced accountability, transparent relationships with partner organizations, and better defined and measured results.

Through effective citizen engagement, CSC wants to maximize the opportunities to work with citizens and local organizations towards building strong and safe communities for Canadians.
