By providing innovative common services to the Government of Canada (GC), PWGSC helps departments and agencies focus on what they do best — serving Canadians.

We provide vital services like accommodation, purchasing, banking, information technology and translation.

We are committed to delivering these services smarter, faster and at a reduced cost — improving how the government does business and saving taxpayer dollars.

Buying and Selling

As the GC’s central purchaser, PWGSC buys more goods and services than any other public organization in the country – buying everything from the flu vaccine to security systems to aircraft.

We offer innovative electronic purchasing tools, allowing departments and agencies to easily place orders for goods and services on-line.

We also sell surplus material, ranging from ships and cars to furniture, clothing and seized goods, on behalf of government departments and agencies.

Greening Government

PWGSC plays a leadership role in greening the GC’s operations. From our Policy on Green Procurement to our green building designs, we help to improve the internal environmental performance of government.

We are also actively involved in the remediation of federal contaminated sites across Canada, helping to restore these lands.

Payments and Pensions

We are Canada’s largest payroll and pension administrator.

We issue payments directly to Canadians on behalf of GC programs.

In support of the Receiver General of Canada, PWGSC is responsible for government-wide central accounting and preparing the Public Accounts of Canada to keep Canadians informed of how the government’s financial resources are managed.

Property and Buildings

PWGSC is the largest owner and manager of office space in all of Canada.

We manage government real property holdings and provide safe, healthy and productive working environments for federal employees in locations all across Canada.

We also offer a range of professional and technical real property services.

Security and Information Services

PWGSC provides advice and tools to help government organizations communicate better with Canadians, and consultation services to improve public sector management and operations.

We publish the Canada Gazette, the GC’s official newspaper, providing Canadians with official notice of new laws and proposed regulations.

We are also the official publisher of GC publications and manage the award-winning Canada Pavilion at major events across Canada.

In addition, PWGSC co-ordinates advertising and public opinion research to improve the effectiveness of government communications.

Technology

PWGSC delivers the common Information Management/Information Technology (IM/IT) infrastructure to the GC.

It also leads the Shared Services initiative, a government-wide coordinated approach to managing IT services more efficiently for clients and taxpayers.

A centerpiece of the government’s common IT infrastructure is the Secure Channel, which allows Canadians to engage in secure and private transactions with the GC.

Translation and Interpretation

We provide translation, interpretation, terminology and linguistic services in both of Canada's official languages, as well as in over 100 other languages, including many Aboriginal languages.

We produce bilingual glossaries and electronic terminology products, such as TERMIUM® — the Government of Canada's linguistic databank.
