A unique feature of WaDImena is that it takes a regional approach to programming while being respectful of country differences, including climatic, cultural, socio-economic, political and religious contexts. Almost all countries in the Middle East North Africa region have subscribed to the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and have developed comprehensive water strategies and/or water plans. Some are still in the processing stage, while others are reworking existing strategies to ensure compliance with the international movement. Each country is at its own place within the larger WDM picture, with a few countries coming out as leaders in institutionalizing a demand management approach. Other countries are encountering difficulties in adopting water efficient technologies and tools as their focus is still on supply augmentation and large infrastructure projects. We advocate an approach toward attitudinal change and promotion of policies and practices that ensure that water is used efficiently, equitably and sustainably. The active WaDImena countries include:
