Candidates Sought for Position of Deputy Ferries Commissioner

The Commission is seeking a Deputy Commissioner for a term starting April 2008.   Here is a Notice of Position with full application details.

Seminar Held for Ferry Advisory Committee Chairs

Held in Nanaimo, this half-day session responded to questions on how the Commission compares the fares actually charged by BC Ferries in relation to fare caps.  You will find questions raised for the meeting, and Commission responses, in a six-page Q&A paper.

BC Ferries Responds to Questions on Service Quality for Bowen Island Service

Prompted by a number of customer complaints about the quality of service on the Bowen Island Service, the Commission asked BC Ferries to respond: the company did so with a memorandumn addressing the Commission’s questions on service quality for Bowen Island.

Income Tax Credits Expected to Become Available for Commuters on BC Ferries

Ferry  commuters should be able to receive federal income tax credits after BC Ferries launches a new card-based electronic payment method in the spring of 2008. Latest details can be found under probes.

Commission Revises Fare Cap Ruling on Major Routes for 2008-2012

The Commission will make a change to BC Ferries’ price caps for the four years 2008 to 2012 included in Order 07-01 of September 18, 2007. The change corrects a Commission error in determining BC Ferries’ allowable costs for the second performance term. It affects only the major route group and raises the price cap as follows:

  • On April 1, 2008 the price cap will increase by 7.3% (up from 6.4% in Order  07-01), and
  • On each of April 1, 2009, 2010 and 2011 the price cap will increase by 2.7% (up from 2.0%) plus 0.49 times the latest reported annual increase in the Consumer Price Index for British Columbia.
  • All other conditions of the previous order remain in effect. The Commission intends to issue a formal order to set the revised price cap for the major route group by no later than December 31, 2007.

    Commission Queries Departure Bay Construction Tender Process

    Based on a concern raised by by the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, the Commission asked BC Ferries to respond to a series of questions on the tender process used for certain construction contracts at its Departure Bay Terminal. You will find the questions and BC Ferries responses here.  The Commission is not proposing to pursue the matter further.
