The Dairy Barn
Our Working Farm
The Canada Agriculture Museum features a working dairy barn. Upon entering the dairy barn you will be welcomed by a mixed breed herd of 45 - 50 cows (an average sized herd for Ontario).
We milk our cows twice a day and sell the milk to the Dairy Farmers of Ontario which in turn sells it to local dairies. At the dairy, our milk is processed, packaged and distributed to grocery stores. Maybe the milk you drank today came from our cows!
Where does milk come from?
Cows are mammals, which means the mothers provide milk for their young. Other mammals that have been domesticated for their milk are sheep, goats, horses, llamas, camels, reindeer, buffaloes and yaks. Smaller mammals, such as mice, cats, pigs and dogs, don't produce large enough quantities of milk for human consumption.
