The Rocky Mountain glaciers are the main reservoir of fresh water for all the Prairie provinces -- a reservoir that may be drying up. Water melting from glaciers high in the Rockies feeds the big river systems criss-crossing the Canadian Prairies. But with world temperatures rising, those glaciers are shrinking. That means less water for wildlife, for agriculture, and for hydroelectric power. NRCan scientists are part of a team that is mapping the glaciers that feed the North and South Saskatchewan River Basins and studying the impacts on communities downstream. They're helping us understand how climate change will affect our most important natural resource -- fresh, clean, abundant water.
