Bulletin #15 Storage Capacity of Blasting Explosives Magazines - The size of a magazine depends on the maximum quantity of explosives to be stored at any one time and the storage method, be it palletized or bulk containers such as Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC), Rigid Intermediate Bulk Containers (RIBC), etc.
Bulletin #16 Zone Licences for Blasting Explosives - In response to requests from across Canada to provide Magazine Licences on short notice, it has been decided to extend the concept of zone licensing to include any blasting contracting firm having such a need. For the Bulletin 16 "Notification of Change of Location" form, please see our Forms section on this web site.
Bulletin #22 Transportation of Explosives in Type IV Magazines - Type IV magazines have been shipped to customers while containing blasting explosives. ERD advises that this practice is not permitted.
Bulletin #29 Safety Advisory: Explosives in Transit - This bulletin is a reminder that vehicles transporting explosives must be properly attended to at all times to ensure public safety.
Bulletin #48 Display Fireworks Certification Program - This bulletin covers the following four topics: recommendation for electricity firing display shells 102-155 mm, changes in criteria for Level 2 Fireworks Supervisor, future changes to the fireworks and pyrotechnics certification program, and revised display site distances.
Bulletin #49 Importation of Explosives: New Forms 13 and 16 - The Importer’s Information Report, Form 16, had originally been introduced to gather vital statistics on the importation of explosives into Canada and has now been redesigned to ensure data integrity and proper reporting by more clearly specifying the fields to be completed. The Application for Import Permit, Form 13, has also been reformatted to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Bulletin #50 Explosives Vendors: It’s your job to know your buyers - Everyone in the country who deals with, or in, explosives has a duty to assist the government in the effort to maintain national security.

The Quantity-Distance (Q-D) tables give the minimum permissible distance between a donor site containing a quantity of explosives and a susceptible site requiring protection. These distances are functions of quantity of explosives (NEQ) and hazard division (HD). For more information see the Quantity Distance Principles User Manual (refer to priced publications section on this page).

Q-D Table for HD 1.1 & 1.5 - Mass explosion hazard (pdf)
D1 - Distance to a barricaded magazine containing only HD 1.5 explosives
D2 - Distance to a barricaded magazine
D3 - Smaller distance to a process building
D4 - Standard distance to a process building/distance to a light traffic route
D5 - Distance to a medium traffic route
D6 - Distance to a magazine (no barricade)
D7 - Distance to an inhabited building/distance to a heavy traffic route
D8 - Distance to building of vulnerable construction
Q-D Table for HD 1.2 - Projection hazard (pdf)
D1 - For rounds up to 60 mm, distance to heavy traffic routes, inhabited buildings and buildings of vulnerable construction
D2 - For rounds above 60 mm, distance to heavy traffic routes, inhabited buildings and buildings of vulnerable construction
Q-D Table for HD 1.3 - Fire hazard with minor blast and/or projection hazard (pdf)
D1 - Distance to a magazine
D2 - Distance to a process building/distance to light traffic route
D3 - Distance to a medium traffic route
D4 - Distance to an inhabited building/distance to a heavy traffic route
Q-D Table for HD 1.4 - Small hazard (pdf)
D1 - Distance to a magazine
D2 - Distance to a process building

Any explosive that is to be imported into or manufactured, transported, possessed or used in Canada must appear on the List of Authorized Explosives or be covered by a permit, certificate or special authority issued by ERD for special tests or product trials. Note that explosives include propellants, ammunition, fireworks, model rockets and toy pistol caps, as well as blasting explosives. A testing protocol is established for authorization and classification of Class 1 (Explosives) and this testing helps to establish the UN classification. Following a review of submitted specifications for the product, this testing protocol may be initiated if further assurances are required or if the product is new in the field. Testing is used to determine the safety of the product and conformity with the manufacturer's specifications. These tests establish criteria for storage, transportation and general use of the product.

The List of Authorized Explosives, can be downloaded in the following parts:
