Natural Hazards and Emergency Response Program Delivery This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.
The Program will reduce losses from natural disasters by developing with
partners and clients:
- a modern robust analysis of seismic risk suitable for developing a modern building code
- effective forecasts of magnetic storms and mitigation strategies against damage to critical infrastructure
- landslide, tsunami, and volcano hazards inventories and assessments for populated centres at risk used by those clients to build effective response scenarios and disaster mitigation
The Program will enhance disaster response preparedness by developing with partners and clients:
- easy access to comprehensive digital and paper custom maps for emergencies
- database interoperability for hazard and infrastructure information
- rapid maps of radioactive contamination caused by accident or malicious intent
- definition of the nature and magnitude of explosions
- experimental prototype real-time seismic shake maps in response to earthquakes
NHER will provide:
- Earth Science Sector knowledge as paper maps and digital maps and
satellite images during national emergencies (e.g. floods) and for mitigation
decision support. The digital data will use CGDI and other standard protocols
for Internet access.

- Maps of the intensity and nature of radiation contamination caused
by accident or malicious intent, in support of response by other federal
departments.

- National and local hazard assessments focused on areas with critical
infrastructure and populated centres at risk. These are assessments of earthquake,
landslide, volcanic eruption and tsunami probability and include the impact
of these on flood hazard potential.

- More comprehensive and up to date information on
Earthquakes,
Geomagnetic Hazards,
Landslides,
Tsunamis
and Volcanic eruptions,

for Canada. These include forecasts of geomagnetic storms, and warning systems for
volcanic ash eruptions and
tsunamis.
