Natural Hazards and Emergency Response
Geomagnetic Hazards

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

Leader: Larry Newitt

This project contributes to the outputs and outcomes of the Program by providing knowledge on how to reduce damage to societal infrastructure caused by geomagnetic storms, which impact Canada more than any other country. It also provides the knowledge necessary to maintain the navigational infrastructure dependent on the earth's magnetic field.

The project works with industrial and university partners to understand the processes by which geomagnetic storms damage systems, leading to a proper estimate of hazard and improved and expanded geomagnetic forecasts. The project updates the Canadian Geomagnetic Reference Field, used to calculate magnetic declination for a wide range of applications.

The project can make a significant economic and social impact on the industries affected by geomagnetic hazards and those who rely on their services. Although applied in nature, the project builds on fundamental research that has an intellectual impact in a number of disciplines.
