HTML Document: This document will open in a new window GHG Genius web site

The GHGenius model has been developed for Natural Resources Canada over the past five years. It is based on the 1998 version of Dr. Mark Delucchi’s Lifecycle Emissions Model (LEM). GHGenius is capable of analyzing the emissions of many contaminants associated with the production and use of traditional and alternative transportation fuels.

The analysis presented in this report provides an evaluation of the potential for economic production of hydrogen by electrolysis within Canada in the context of the power generation sector. This assignment is intended to support Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance (CTFCA) in the ongoing work of evaluating the viability of electrolysis as a fuelling pathway to hydrogen by assessing the supply of electricity available within each province and the cost and GHG emissions associated with that supply in the context of added demand due to hydrogen production.

This study provides an economic comparison of hydrogen to gasoline and diesel as a transportation fuel. In addition, it examines the impact of including indirect costs or benefits, referred to as externalities, and various government policy options on the comparison.
A lifecycle analysis approach, which includes the full costs associated with the manufacturing, distribution and operation of the vehicle, was used in conducting this comparison.

The goal of this work was to add two new hydrogen pathways, coal to hydrogen and biomass to hydrogen. The new pathways are fully integrated into GHGenius, for each fuel cycle the fuel will be used for both light duty and heavy duty applications fuel cell applications so the full cycle results for sheets AC, AD, Cost LDV, Cost HDV, Summary LDV, and Summary HDV will include both light duty and heavy duty results. Sheets K and I have also been modified to include the new fuel cycles. All of the existing functionality of the model has been retained.

Industry and governments are positioning hydrogen as a new, clean solution to the problems associated with conventional fuels. An environmental label is one method of marketing the environmental benefits of hydrogen and will likely be used wherever it proves beneficial. Environmental labels have often been voluntarily adopted for marketing purposes. However, it has become increasingly important to develop clear guidelines for products to help consumers make informed purchases because the wide variety of environmental statements currently in the marketplace can be misleading and lack credibility. An environmental label’s value depends directly on consumers’ trust in the label.
