Shortcomings in the bartering system led to the invention
of money. Gallery 2 traces the history of money in different
parts of the world and highlights the development of three
separate and independent currency systems in China, the Indian
subcontinent, and the Western world. The development of coinage
in the West is illustrated by pieces from different eras:
antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern era up to the
current day. Other topics of interest covered in Gallery 2
include the technical evolution in minting coins, the origin
of the dollar, the development of paper money, the use of
unusual paper money, and hyperinflation. |
