With Confederation in 1867, the Dominion Government began to issue its own coins and bank notes. As the provinces joined Confederation, they too adopted the Canadian currency. Chartered banks were gradually limited in their note-issuing rights until the creation of the Bank of Canada in 1934 gave the central bank the sole authority to issue notes. With the opening of the Royal Canadian Mint in 1908 it was no longer necessary to order coins struck in Britain. Among the items on display are the first Dominion notes, the first three series of Bank of Canada notes, the silver dollar, and some early commemorative coins..
