Wolsong Units 1, 2, 3 and 4, Republic of Korea

WolsongLocated along the eastern shoreline of South Korea (Republic of Korea), the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant Site hosts four CANDU 6 units designed by AECL.

Wolsong 1 went into service in 1983. Wolsong 2, 3 & 4 are the most recent projects -completed within budget and on schedule in 1997, 1998 and 1999 respectively. KHNP (Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Co.) was the Project Manager for Wolsong Units 2, 3 and 4, and AECL was the Prime Contractor for Design and Equipment supply.

The Wolsong project continues to prove itself:

  • Wolsong 4 is the best performing nuclear plant in Korea on a lifetime basis, and the best performing CANDU plant in the world.
  • Over 40 combined reactor years of excellent performance of the four CANDU 6 Units in Wolsong.
  • Due to outstanding lifetime performance (85% overall) of Wolsong Unit 1, KHNP plans retubing of the reactor in 2009, working with AECL as the Prime contractor for design, equipment supply and installation. With the continued excellent operating conditions by KHNP, the plant will operate for an additional 25 to 30 years.
  • Localization of technology, with associated technology transfer for engineering, construction, materials supply and services, increased from 20% in Unit 1 to 75% in Unit 4. This has also resulted in the export of Korean manufactured CANDU components to other countries, such as China for the Qinshan.
