Too many Nova Scotians are being hurt at work.  While the economic impact of workplace injuries and illnesses is staggering, the devastation of a debilitating injury or death is the tragic reality for many individuals, their families and the communities in which they live.

The Prevention Services Department wants to make changes in the way that Nova Scotians think about workplace safety.  By working with employers, workers, and partner associations, we will develop ways to create awareness, change behaviours and promote best practices to reduce workplace injury and illness.

The Prevention Program is driven by four key objectives:

1. Increase awareness and knowledge
2. Promote attitude and behaviour change
3. Support adoption of best practices, and
4. Improve outcomes

We offer a number of prevention programs and services to assist you in reducing injuries in your workplace.  Check out our Programs and Services section to learn more.

Responsibility for health and safety prevention education belongs to our Prevention Services Department.  Nova Scotia Environment and Labour (NSEL) maintains responsibility for the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and their enforcement.  As well, NSEL continues to administer and enforce legal standards for health and safety in the workplace.
