WHAT WE DO


The mandate of the Employment Standards Branch is to administer the Employment Standards Act. The act establishes employee entitlements with respect to payment of wages, vacation pay, statutory holidays, notice of termination, minimum wage rates, overtime pay, maternity and parental leave protection.

The Branch, in carrying out its mandate, provides factual information to the public through telephone contact, office interviews, information sessions, routine inspections and distribution of Departmental literature.

The program assists injured workers or their families on the benefits they are entitled to receive under the Workers Compensation Act on Prince Edward Island.

Labour Relations Board



WHAT WE DO


The Labour Relations Board provides a quasi-judicial process to resolve applications that either management or labour may bring before it. The board attempts to provide a speedy resolution for all matters while at the same time trying to provide for and maintain harmonious labour relations in the province.

Under the Labour Act, the role of the Industrial Relations Council is that of a labour/management advisory body with a broad mandate, aimed at fostering good employer/employee relations in the province.

WHAT WE DO


The Branch is responsible for providing a variety of services to the unionized workforce of Prince Edward Island. In meeting this objective the Branch:
  • responds to applications for conciliation and mediation services upon request from labour and/or management when there is an impasse in negotiation;
  • All applications for conciliation must be accompanied by a Request for Appointment of a Conciliation Officer;
  • averts work stoppages through third party assistance;
  • works with the parties in resolving work stoppages;
  • assists in the development of sound labour/management relations;
  • assists organizations in establishing a labour/management committee in the workplace.

Employment Standards Board



WHAT WE DO


The primary role of the Employment Standards Board is to hear appeal presentations from employers who have a complaint filed against them for alleged violations of the Employment Standards Act and also to make recommendations to the Lieutenant Governor in Council with regard to changes in the Minimum Wage Order.
