Yes, AAFC has always been involved in international scientific cooperation and is presently enhancing his involvement worldwide.
2.What role does AAFC play in international affairs?
It is actively involved in areas such as the following:
  • Framework agreements for cooperation
  • Cooperation agreements with multilateral organizations (UN agencies, IICA)
  • International treaties
  • Joint scientific projects with about 50 countries
  • Numerous contributions to international agencies, journals, conferences, universities
3. What does AAFC do to promote international scientific cooperation?
In 2003, AAFC created a Chief Scientist International position and set up a four-person team charged with promoting and coordinating scientific collaboration with other countries and with international organizations.
4. Does AAFC have a strategy for international cooperation?
Yes, AAFC has developed a strategy based on three objectives:
  • Objective 1: Ensure collaborative international research so that Canada will be recognized for its excellence both at home and abroad
  • Objective 2: Provide the scientific expertise that AAFC needs to address technical questions related to trade and development requirements
  • Objective 3: Promote cooperation and leadership among multilateral organizations
5. Why does AAFC participate in international scientific cooperation?
International science and technology activities are essential for advancing knowledge, creating wealth and improving quality of life.

Researchers need to collaborate and share scientific information with other countries so they can stay abreast of the latest scientific developments.

  • Researchers should participate in collaborative research projects beyond those that Canada can fund unilaterally.
  • The federal government should participate in and contribute to international scientific forums so that it can make informed decisions related to science-based issues that are international in scope.
  • Researchers need to acquire information about new technologies at the international level, because this helps to provide Canadian companies with competitive information for product and service development.
6. What science and innovation strengths does AAFC bring to international cooperation?
Areas of science in which AAFC has developed significant expertise are as follows:
  • Sustainable production - grains, dairy products, potatoes, canola, water management
  • Food quality and safety
  • Biodiversity
  • Biotechnology
7. With which countries does AAFC have important international cooperation ties?
AAFC has important ties with a number of OECD countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.
