Deputy Minister of Community Safety and Correctional ServicesDeborah NewmanDeborah Newman was appointed Deputy Minister, Community Safety and Correctional Services, on November 23, 2005. She was appointed Deputy Minister, Community Safety in September, 2005, after serving as Assistant Deputy Minister, Youth Justice Services, since 2002. From 2000 to 2002, Ms. Newman was Assistant Deputy Minister of Community and Young Offender Services. In her new position, Ms. Newman's responsibilities include provincial correctional services, policing and counter-terrorism, public safety (including the Centre of Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Office of the Fire Marshal) and emergency management. Ms. Newman has a diverse and extensive background working in the justice sector at the federal and provincial levels. She joined Ontario's Ministry of Correctional Services in 1987 and has held positions including Deputy Superintendent, Maplehurst Correctional Centre; Superintendent, the Ontario Correctional Institute; Executive Assistant to the Deputy Solicitor General and Deputy Minister of Correctional Services; Regional Manager, Eastern Region; District Administrator, St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley; and Regional Director, Community and Young Offender Services. Prior to joining the Ontario Public Service, she served the Alberta Government, as Area Manager, Probation; Assistant Deputy Director, Edmonton Remand Centre; Deputy Director, Operations, Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre; Assistant Director, Belmont Correctional Centre; and Assistant Regional Director, Correctional Services. In 1998/99, Ms. Newman participated in an Interchange Canada assignment as a Director with Human Resources Development Canada, where she was responsible for the delivery of employment insurance benefits, employment programs and income security programs. Ms. Newman holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Criminology from the University of Ottawa. |
