Sustainable Development and International Affairs

peopleThe natural resource sectors are at the centre of the sustainable development challenge.  Energy, minerals and metals, forestry are at the heart of Canada's history, economy and culture, providing high-paying jobs to Canadians in all regions of the country and making a substantial contribution to gross domestic product. At the same time, these sectors are faced with significant challenges, such as climate change, international competitive pressures, environmental impacts of operations, concerns regarding biodiversity, land and water management, accessing skilled workers, and Aboriginal engagement.

Sustainable development presents unique opportunities that Canada is positioned to seize – ensuring that future generations will also be able to enjoy a high quality of life. As natural resource sectors are integrated into an increasingly globalized economy, it is important to manage a strategic approach to advancing Canada's interests in the international context

Sustainable Development and International Affairs advances the department's contribution to sustainable development – central to NRCan's mandate, and a key priority of the Government of Canada – at home and abroad.
