Inventing stories about strangers in neighbouring cars is one way of passing the time on a road trip. Dealing with mishaps is often another. The Belliveaus’ van broke down outside Brandon, Man., on the night before this shot was taken. While fixing it early the next morning, Jaret had to get into the rear of the vehicle: “I opened the side door exposing David to the outside. It was early so the light made the photograph for me.”
