Polymer Composites : High-performance Materials

In relation to the research conducted in the field of polymers, a team of specialists at IMI has developed unparalleled expertise in the field of polymer composites (reinforced polymers). The Canadian composites industry is one of the most important with regard to the number of companies it contains and its role among numerous industrial sectors. A reduction in manufacturing costs, productivity increases, environmental protection, the manufacture of high-quality products and recycling are the challenges facing the composites industry. IMI has all the tools to help it meet these challenges successfully.

The Institute's R&D activities in the polymer composites field focus primarily on forming processes for these materials. The goal of the work is to optimize the processes and the performance of the materials through better control of their microstructure. Technological expertise focuses on:

Polymer Composites
Thermoplastic Composites
Nanocomposites

The interest and relevance of the work conducted has led to the realization of a major multi-partner project in the composites field, bringing together ten companies in this industrial sector. Begun in 1998, the project has completed important steps that have resulted in leading-edge technology developments for the industry, especially with regard to thermoplastic composites.
