    Programs

The WSIB offers a number of incentive programs that help employers meet their prevention responsibilities and build healthy and safe workplaces.

If you're an employer, you can get help on how to build and maintain a safe workplace and can receive financial and other rewards for doing so. (Note: Some programs will automatically apply to you. Check each program for details. If your company falls into more than one rate group, you may be covered by incentive programs for each rate group.)

The WSIB also offers key training and educational programs. The training is delivered by health and safety partners and approved providers.

    Incentive Programs

WSIB commissioned this report on Assessing the Effects of Experience Rating in Ontario (413k, pdf).

    CAD-7
CAD-7 is a prevention incentive program that applies to employers in the construction sector
    • who have been operating for at least one year, and
    • whose average annual premiums are more than $25,000.
Through CAD-7, you can earn refunds on your premiums by maintaining a good health and safety record. If you have a poor health and safety record, you may be assessed surcharges.

Merit Adjusted Premium (MAP) plan for small business
If you pay between $1,000 and $25,000 in WSIB premiums per year, MAP automatically applies to you. Through MAP you can reduce your premiums by maintaining a good health and safety record. If your health and safety record is poor, your premium rate will increase.

New Experimental Experience Rating (NEER) Program
NEER automatically applies to you if you pay more than $25,000 per year in premiums and are in a non-construction rate group. (If you are in one or more construction sector rate groups, see CAD-7.) Through NEER, you can earn rebates on your premiums by maintaining a good health and safety record. If you have a poor health and safety record, you may be assessed surcharges.

    Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP)
SCIP promotes safety in the workplace and can reduce insurance premium costs for small businesses. Participating firms gain access to health and safety training programs, resources, and health and safety experts to help them create better, safer workplaces.

    Safety Groups Program
The Safety Groups Program brings people and businesses together to share information about preventing injury and illness in the workplace. As an eligible participant, you will
    • learn about other companies' best practices,
    • have the chance to be a mentor, and
    • receive financial incentives for improving health and safety in your workplace.

    Workwell
The WSIB may perform on-site health and safety evaluations of workplaces that have consistently poor safety records. Based on these evaluations, employers may be subject to charges in addition to any other surcharges that have been levied. Evaluated employers receive a report on health and safety problems found in their workplace, and recommendations for improvement. If you are being evaluated under Workwell, you can find more information here.

    Training and Educational Programs

    Certification Training
The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that workplaces above a certain size train at least one worker and one management person to serve as certified members of a workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). This certification involves training in the identification and control of hazards, and in health and safety law. Check this section to find out if this requirement applies to you, and how to acquire the appropriate training.

    First Aid Program
Do you know your first aid obligations as an employer? Check here to find out what your responsibilities are and where you can find first aid training programs.

    Young Worker Awareness Safety Program
Did you know that 8,000 young workers are injured on the job every year? The Young Worker Awareness Safety Program will give your young people the knowledge they need to work safely. This job safety training program will be provided free of charge at any Ontario high school.

Students and teachers will also want to visit The Young Worker Awareness Web site – it's designed specifically for youth and has lots of resources and straightforward answers about workplace health and safety.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Did you know that WHMIS regulations require employers to provide proper training for anyone who works with or may be exposed to hazardous materials? These regulations also require warning labels and material safety data sheets (MSDS) for the various hazardous materials found in your workplace. This section directs you to help in setting up a training program, and will tell you how to obtain material safety data sheets.

    Musculoskeletal Injuries Prevention Program (MIPP)
Enroll in this 6-hour training program to learn about the causes and prevention of common musculoskeletal injuries, including repetitive stress injuries.
