Canada's Natural Resources Now and for the Future

Earth Sciences

From the first surveys of Canada's landmass to the latest global positioning systems applications, earth sciences has been an integral part of our natural resources sector.

Our activities in earth sciences range from mapping groundwater resources, to remote sensing, to satellite imaging, to studying the impact of climate change. Through our activities, we are contributing toward the sustainable development of Canada's natural resources.

Our world-class expertise in geoscience surveys, environmental protection and technology innovation make the Geological Survey of Canada the country's premier agency for geoscientific information and research.

Through Geomatics Canada, we survey and map the Canadian landmass, collect and manage a growing volume of digital maps and develop innovative geographic information systems and remote sensing applications that contribute to Canada's reputation as a world leader in the geomatics industry.

Our Polar Continental Shelf Project provides logistical support to public and private institutions conducting research north of the 70th parallel to define geographic limits, establish mineral claims, study climate change and record traditional knowledge about the North's Aboriginal peoples.

Sharing Our Geospatial Knowledge

Our GeoConnections initiative is helping to make Canada's geospatial databases available over the Internet for Canadians and for the world. It is coordinating the efforts and investments of its partners in the public and private sectors to create the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure and establish technologies and policies to access and use geospatial data across Canada.

Responding to Climate Change

The Government of Canada's Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Program provides funding for new research to fill critical gaps that limit our knowledge of Canada's vulnerability to climate change. It also supports and undertakes assessments of the latest science related to impacts and adaptation, enhances collaboration between stakeholders and researchers, and facilitates policy development. The program is managed by the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Directorate.

Earth sciences are contributing to making our natural resources sector a cornerstone of our economy — Canada is a world leader in sales of remote-sensing products and services, and geomatics is one of our fastest growing industries. By supporting these resource industries, we can ensure that Canada remains competitive in international markets. And through sustainable development, all Canadians will enjoy the economic, social and environmental benefits of our natural resources.
