Canada's Natural Resources Now and for the Future

Minerals and Metals

As one of the world's largest producers and exporters of minerals and metals, Canada depends greatly on these resources. This highly productive sector is among the largest users of high technology and provides a source of stable and high income for northern, remote and Aboriginal communities.

Developing our mineral and metal resources sustainably ensures that Canadians benefit from them now, and that these resources will continue to contribute to our quality of life in the future. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) leads the government in promoting the sustainable development and wise use of these resources, domestically and internationally. We administer Canada's Export and Import of Rough Diamonds Act and the Explosives Act and Regulations through permits, licences and inspections. As well, we are a source of authoritative knowledge and expertise on minerals and metals markets and commodities.

We work with a wide range of stakeholders, collaborating with and providing research services to governmental, institutional and industrial clients (from mining to manufacturing) to develop innovative new technologies with economic, environmental and social benefits for Canadians.

We have helped Canada become a world leader in technology, with market niches in lightweight metals, mining health and safety, environmental protection and financing. Canadian mining companies are also leading the way in integrating sustainable development into their activities in Canada and abroad.

From Research to Innovation

Through three of Canada's primary scientific research institutions, we generate and disseminate knowledge about the Canadian minerals and metals industry. The Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories focus on research and development in mining, processing and related environmental issues. The Materials Technology Laboratory collaborates with industry on research and technologies to improve value-added products from minerals and metals. The Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory is Canada's centre for the advancement of technology related to the manufacture, transportation and storage of explosives; it also has a unique facility for testing equipment used in hazardous locations.

Our research work in the minerals and metals sector will help us face the challenges of the knowledge-based economy, so that future generations will continue to reap the benefits from our resources.
