Industry Canada's Sustainable Development Strategy for 2000-2003 is guided by
a commitment to promote sustainable development as part of its mandate to create
the foundation for a more productive, competitive, knowledge-based economy.
This vision calls for the Department to play a leadership role and form partnerships
to promote sustainable development by promoting eco-efficiency, environmental
technologies and decision-making.

Sustainable
Development Strategy II Advisory Committee Meeting Proceedings
Industry Canada established an Advisory Committee to provide strategic input
to its second Sustainable Development Strategy. Committee members were
invited to: comment on the content of the draft strategy as well as the process
for developing it; provide comment and advice on the proposed three objectives
for the SDS; and engage in a discussion of the draft strategy with Industry
Canada representatives.

Stakeholder Comments on the Second
Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS II) fall 2000
This report provides a summary of the comments received by Industry Canada during
the public consultations for SDS II, that took place in September 2000. The
objective of this process was to seek the perspectives of clients, partners
and stakeholders on departmental priorities for SDS II. Comments are summarized
according to each of the three major SDS II themes (Eco-efficiency, Environmental
Technologies, Decision-making). Individual reports from the Montreal and Toronto
sessions are also included.

Canada sponsors study on Corporate Sustainability Reporting in Canada
Stepping Forward presents the results of a recent survey conducted by Stratos
Inc., which provides the first in-depth examination and assessment of current
sustainability reporting practices and trends in Canada. The survey reveals
that in 2000/01, 57 companies in Canada published voluntary corporate sustainability
reports, which provide detailed information on their sustainability management
and performance.

Policy Forum's Roundtable on Environmental Protection & Business Competitiveness
Industry Canada was a sponsor of this event, held in Toronto on March 21 &
22, 2001. The main issue considered was the evolution of environmental policy
frameworks in the U.S. and Canada and the implications for the competitiveness
of Canadian business. This summary paper provided participant with a framework
to structure the discussion, as well as illustrative examples that compare selected
standards in Canada and the U.S.
