Workshop on Birth Control Methods and the Prevention
of Unplanned Pregnancies - Annex #8
Theme: Examples (teacher's answer
sheet)
Pete and Jennifer have been going out for several
months. They regularly use condoms to protect themselves against
STIs and unplanned pregnancies. One evening the condom accidentally
tears. What would you suggest to them?
- Consulting a health professional as quickly as possible
- Resorting to an emergency method
- Learning how to properly use a condom
Karen is very active and very involved in her
school. She often forgets homework at home or to go to meetings.
She confides in you that she is considering having sex with
her boyfriend, but that they don't know what method to
use. What is your advice to Karen?
- Discussing it with a health professional
- Using a condom (protection against STIs and unplanned
pregnancies)
- Birth-control pill (good rate of efficiency if used
regularly – does not protect against STIs)
- Depo-provera (practical – 3 months between injections – partner
can get involved by reminding her of doctor's appointments – no
protection against STIs)
Your friend Mark tells you that he and his girlfriend
Janet had sex for the first time. When you ask him if he had
thought about protection against an unplanned pregnancy, he
tells you that they chose coitus interruptus. What can you
tell him?
- Method is inefficient since impregnation is possible
with pre-ejaculatory liquid
- A health professional must be seen at once
- The emergency method becomes a last resort
- Still at risk for STIs
