An acquired brain injury is a trauma that occurs after birth and is not related to a congenital disorder or a degenerative disease such as Alzheimer disease or multiple sclerosis. Traffic accidents cause half of all acquired brain injuries in Ontario and 70% of the most severe cases. Young men aged 16 to 24 are the largest group affected. Many people with acquired brain injuries live in supportive housing with staff who are available on-site 24 hours a day to help them live independently in their own apartments. Others receive support at home through the Community Care Access Centres. Call your local Community Care Access Centre for more information. Attendant Services
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has two programs which provide trained attendants to help people with physical disabilities live independently at home : Attendant Outreach program
The Attendant Outreach program provides visitation attendant services to people with severe or serious physical disabilities. Call your local Community Care Access Centre for more information.
Self-Managed Attendant Services
The Self-Managed Attendant Services program lets people with disabilities choose and hire their own attendants. For information on this program, contact the Centre For Independent Living in Toronto at 416-599-2458. Independent Living resource links :
Children's Treatment Centres
The 19 Children's Treatment Centres across the province provide a range of services for children and youth up to 19 years of age who have physical disabilities or communication disorders. Services include physiotherapy, occupational therapy and treatment for speech and language disorders. In 1997/98, these centres treated over 27,000 children and youths. Children's Treatment Centres are community-based organizations that have developed locally across the province to serve children with physical disabilities and multiple special needs. The centres range in size and scope but each provides physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy as core services. A wide variety of other services and clinics are provided depending on local needs and the mix of other providers in each community. Call your local Children's Treatment Centre or Community Care Access Centre for more information. |
