Maelstrom

Wood, 6" X 12" X 4, September 2002

A natural rimmed bowl from a poplar burl. This was turned on a wood lathe. The black rim was created by applying a solution made by soaking rusty steel wool in vinegar for several days. The solution reacts with wood tannins to turn the wood black. This piece was one of 140 art entries of various media submitted to the 2002 Festival of the Arts in Sault Ste Marie and won Best of Wood and Best of Show. The other larger bowl was turned from Manitoba maple or boxelder burl. Red staining in the bowl is caused by a naturally occurring fusarium fungus.
