Other police service applicants

The Lateral Entry Program allows entry of graduates from provincially recognized applied police training institutions, and of members of other Canadian police agencies into the RCMP as non-commissioned members.

Lateral entry applies to two categories of candidates:

  • Category 1: regular member applicant, who has had more than two years of Canadian Police experience, within a year of application to the RCMP and who graduated from a Canadian, provincially recognized, applied police training.
  • Category 2: regular member applicant, who has had up to two years of Canadian police experience, within a year of application to the RCMP and graduated from a Canadian, provincially recognized, applied police training.

Non-public police agency experience alone, e.g. military police, Canadian National railway police, is not acceptable for this program.

Pre-selection
All candidates must successfully meet all entrance requirements previously stated for new applicants with no prior police experience. Lateral entrant must meet a Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation (PARE) time of four minutes or less.

A lateral entry applicant will not compete with Cadet Training Program regular member applicants.

When applying, you must forward to your local recruiting office a copy of the following documents:

  • a Resume (description of previous police experience)
  • a copy of all your performance appraisals
  • education and training, supported by certificates, transcripts, or other documentation.

A category 2 applicant will be required to successfully pass an oral board. A written test will be administered online by the RCMP Training Academy.

Please note: Prior service with another police service is not recognized for calculating benefits. Pension is not transferable to the RCMP.
