More and more organizations are learning that healthy workplaces provide better citizen service. A healthy and happy employee will go the extra mile to help someone. Citizen satisfaction can be enhanced through workplace wellness initiatives.

At the same time, healthy workplaces reduce absenteeism, employee turnover, medical costs, and job accidents. While there may be certain costs to improving organizational health, overall benefits and efficiencies usually make these additional costs worthwhile.

In Manitoba a committee has been formed to promote workplace wellness within the Manitoba government. The National Quality Institute, together with Health Canada, have defined the key elements of a healthy workplace as:

• physical environment
• health practices
• social environment
• personal resources

...organizing educational / resource opportunities for staff.

The Workplace Wellness Committee currently organizes:

• Provincial Government resource people
• a Workplace Wellness web site
• regular lunch meetings with guest speakers
• promotion of WW events in Manitoba & Canada
