Celebrating Canada's National Honours,
their recipients and their stories

A new mobile exhibit is on the road travelling across Canada to connect, honour and inspire Canadians. It’s An Honour! introduces visitors to the Canadian System of Honours which recognizes people for their extraordinary achievement, bravery, valour and service. Over the next two years, the mobile exhibit will journey to schools, community centres, special events and small towns across the country.

Special Features

Featuring interpretative panels, multimedia elements and artifacts, the exhibit provides an opportunity for visitors of all ages to learn more about these honours and some of their recipients.

Mounted in a specially designed vehicle (approx. 1,000 sq. feet), the exhibit is bilingual and supported by a knowledgeable guide. It is accessible to everyone and admission is free.

  • Catch a glimpse of insignia and medals, including the Victoria Cross, Canada’s highest honour, as well as the Order of Canada, Decorations for Bravery and a variety of military decorations.
  • Discover stories of honours recipients, test their knowledge of Canada’s national honours and share their comments in the exhibit’s interactive areas.
  • Watch an inspiring hologram message from Chris Hadfield, former Canadian Astronaut and the first Canadian to hold both the military and civil Meritorious Service Decorations.
  • Learn more about the role and responsibilities of the Governor General of Canada.
  • Find out how they can nominate deserving individuals from their community.

Background

One of the objectives of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General and the Chancellery of Honours is to increase awareness of Canada’s national honours and to profile the Canadians, from across the country and from all walks of life, who receive these honours. The It’s an Honour travelling exhibit provides an opportunity to bring to hundreds of schools and communities across the country a hands-on interactive learning experience. The exhibit also provides an opportunity to increase national pride as our country moves towards its 150th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Order of Canada and of the Canadian Honours System which was created in 1967.

The content of the exhibit was inspired by words chosen to reflect the values that Canadians respect and exemplify and that also form the foundation of our system of honours: courage, inspiration, tradition, service and excellence. The 1000 square foot mobile exhibit pays tribute to everyday and celebrated Canadians through stories, interactive media, touch and feel panels with actual medals and artefacts.

This travelling exhibit is made possible through the generosity of The Taylor Family Foundation as a tribute to the women, men and youth of Canada whose achievements, courage and dedication to service exemplify the heart and soul of our nation.
