Water

Alberta Environment is responsible for water policy and legislation to ensure the quality and quantity of our water resources and to ensure thriving ecosystems now and in the future.

The Water Act guides our work. The Legislation link will take you to information about the Water Act, approvals and licences, guidelines, and codes of practice. If you want to know what Alberta Environment is doing to manage water resources provincially and regionally – including Water for Life: Alberta’s Strategy for Sustainability – go to the Water Management section of the site.

Learn about the province’s seven major water systems in Alberta River Basins. You’ll also find dynamic data from clickable maps including river and water advisories and warnings, water data, and water supply reports. Detailed databases with flood plain information, survey benchmarks and groundwater wells are available under the Water Information Centre.

In addition to managing our water resources, Alberta has a long history of providing safe drinking water to Albertans. The Drinking Water Quality section provides detailed information about Alberta’s regulated drinking water program.

Other links on this site will take you to information about Municipal and Industrial Wastewater; Reports/Studies and Initiatives; Forms required for applications, approvals and notifications; and Links to other water resources.
