Certification

Alberta Environment has had an operator certification program in place since 1975.  In 1982, the department amended the regulations to require a specified number of certified operators for each approved waterworks and wastewater system in Alberta.  In 1993, a classification for small system operators was established.

The certification process requires application to a Minister-appointed advisory committee that assesses the experience and education requirements for the specified certificate class.  There are small systems certificates and Class I to IV certificates for both water treatment plant and distribution system operations, ranging from least to most complex in terms of operational competencies.

Alberta legislation requires that specified municipal water and wastewater and solid waste management facilities have one or more certified operators to supervise the day to day operation. The operating approval for each facility specifies the certified operator requirements.
