Abstract:
A multi-year collaborative effort among Tembec Inc., Canadian Ecology Centre, OMNR and CFS and other partners to develop strategies that can be used to move toward intensive forest management. This partnership was created after the announcement of Ontario's Living Legacy and the Ontario Forest Accord that provided the framework for partnerships. Forestry Research Partnership projects will focus on assessing and improving forest management practices to ensure sustainability. Many of the projects fall within the following themes: Spatial Analysis; Sustainability (Biodiversity); Fibre Production; Forest Management; and, Operational Implementation.

Objectives:
To identify technology and techniques that will allow Tembec to increase the annual allowable cut (AAC) on its licence areas by 10 percent in 10 years. This target is to be achieved in the context of ecological sustainability, reduced operational costs, improved fibre utilization and enhanced future fibre quality.

Location:
Through northeastern and north central Ontario

Key Deliverables:
The success and value of the Forestry Research Partnership will be measured by the degree to which it demonstrates:
• Certainty around current and future wood supply availability;
• Shareholder and taxpayer value for money spent;
• An effective Science Partnership that promotes good science and enlightened forest policy not only for Tembec and Ontario but also for other companies and jurisdictions across Canada.

Expected Benefits:
Increased fibre supply that offsets the losses from the reduction in land base as a result of the completion of Ontario's Parks and Protected areas within the area of concern and that can allow for additional areas to be placed aside for future parks and protected areas as production and utilization increases.

Sources of Funding:
CFS, OMNR, Tembec Inc., Ontario's Living Legacy Trust (OLLT)

Other Collaborators:
Canadian Ecology Centre, NSERC, National Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Forest Management, Temperate Forest Foundation, FERIC, FORINTEK, FedNor, Forest Ecosystem Science Coop, University of Guelph

Nature of Other Collaborators' Involvement:
The various secondary partners are involved in the administration of the program or the delivery or funding of individual projects.
