Abstract:

Objectives:
Use the most current models to predict future fire climate across the global boreal zone; predict future boreal fire dynamics/regimes under a changing climate; inventory the extent and atmospheric impact of biomass burning globally; reconstruct Holocene boreal fire regimes as an analogue for the future; and, investigate interactions between climate, fire and vegetation.

Location:
Various locations across the world

Key Deliverables:
Journal Articles- relationships between airborne and lake sediment charcoal particles; Canadian climate and fire activity inter-relationships using spatially-gridded data; Association between mid-troposphere circulation anomalies and area burned by wildfire in Canada Gridded biomass burning inventory Reconstruction of post-1980 large fire in Russia using NOAA-AVHRR satellite imagery; scientific results from 1997 IGBP IGAC Biomass Burning Experiment in East Africa; Holocene fire dynamics; Climate change and Caribou Range; Innovation- create new RCM/GCM database for fire danger calculation from transient run. Poster - Future fire weather using the Regional Climate Model. Manuscripts- Climate change and forest fires; Fire, Climate change and Carbon Cycling in the boreal Forest. Paper- Regional climate model projections of future Canadian fire climates. Innovation- N.W.T. International Crown Fire Modeling experiment.
