Abstract:

Objectives:
To develop an Infrared Data Acquisition System and Fire Analysis Correctional Technique System (FACTS) for fire behavior monitoring; to develop an understanding for the proper application of understory prescribed fire for promoting red pine and white pine regeneration; to understand the relationship between mineral soil seedbed and natural jack pine regeneration after wildfire; to model fire behavior characteristics of mixedwood and jack pine forest fuel types; and, to investigate cone and seed development of fire-killed white pines.

Location:
red and white pine stands in Ontario

Key Deliverables:
Paper- Use of understory prescribed fire in bracken fern control; Journal Articles - Results of 1997 African Fire-Atmospheric Research Initiative for the characterizing of smoke emissions from biomass burning in eastern African savannas; and, Seedbed requirements for natural regeneration of jack pine following wildfire. Upgrading of the Infrared Fire Data Acquisition System.

Expected Benefits:

Sources of Funding:
Climate Change and Fire Research Network

Other Collaborators:
Mike Kane, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources

Nature of Other Collaborators' Involvement:
In-kind funding for planning and conducting the Sturgeon experimental burns; and, In-kind funding for planning and conducting the Lafoe experimental burns.
