Abstract:
Historically, density manipulation has been the dominant theme underlying intensive forest management (IFM) programs within Canada: national statistics indicate that approximately $1 billion were spent on silviculture treatments in 1995 and included the planting of approximately 641 million seedlings on 256,400 hectares and precommercially thinning on 167,746 hectares. Basically, the effect of these practices at the stand-level is to decrease the time to operability status and increase product value over the rotation. Furthermore, when temporal/spatial explicit stand-level responses are scaled to the forest-level within forest management units with unbalanced age-structures and excess mature stands, increased annual allowable cuts (AAC) via the allowable cut effect (ACE) is possible given the change in stand-sequencing within the harvesting queue.

Objectives:
To upgrade existing stand density management diagrams by developing stand density management models for selected species regionalized for Tembec's productive forest.

Location of Project Activities:
Sault Ste. Marie, Northeastern Ontario

Key Deliverables:
Compilation of existing data sets for black spruce and jack pine; locate the first group of temporary permanent sample plots on Tembec's licensed areas in managed black spruce and jack pine stands.

Expected Benefits:
The outputs will permit a method to identify existing stands to be thinned and determining the timing, type of thinning treatment and number of trees or basal area to be removed; selecting initial planting densities and spatial configurations to attain operability/ACE targets; and, develop site-specific integrated strategic density management control regimes for maximizing net forest production, product value and carbon sequestration.
