Abstract:

Objectives:
Evaluate vegetation succession in relation to harvesting methodologies; describe post-harvest vegetation successional patterns in two boreal forests; compare characteristics of vegetation succession subsequent to 3 types of perturbation; assess vegetation succession in relation to micro-environmental factors; i.e., investigate the natural dynamics of forest ecosystems in the Boreal Shield Ecozone; develop spatially distributed, landscape-scape, successional models for forest ecosystems in the Boreal Shield Ecozone; upgrade the quality and accessibility of the GLFC plant herbarium as a regional reference resource.

Location:
Boreal Shield Ecozone

Key Deliverables:
Journal Articles- post-harvest response; post-harvest vegetation succession; changes in structure and species composition following two episodic cycles of spruce budworm; vegetation response under various micro-environment regimes.

Expected Benefits:
This study will help us better understand the fundamental successional processes necessary to realistically forecast future outcomes of current forest management practices.

Sources of Funding:
Forest Ecosystem Processes Network
