Road Safety Videos
Spring is here, and summer is not far away. Bicycles and ATVs make summers in the NWT more fun, but they require both skill and attention.

The B.C. Children's Hospital has a powerful public service announcement on bike helmets for children. The U.S. National Highway Transportation Safety has an excellent video on bicycle safety that includes pointers on choosing a helmet, selecting the right sized bike, and tips for safe riding. And this is a good video if you want to show pre-teens the importance of wearing their helmet. For teens and older, Ottawa Public Health and Children's Hospital encourages them "Do not use your brains for brakes" (with simple to understand information on why wearing helmets is so important.)  This is a must see for anyone planning to ride a bike, ATV, skateboard, or motorcycle.

Bike helmets work by letting the impact dent and crush them so that your head doesn't have to absorb the impact. Any helmet that is cracked or dented should be replaced.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada has informative videos on the following subjects:
  • Helmet Safety
  • Driver Distraction
  • Winter Tire Safety
  • Snowmobile Safety

You can access the videos here. Take their Driver Distraction Game and see how well you do.

From Britain comes the Think! campaign on seat belt use. The video available here shows what can happen when you wear your seat belt - and when you don't.

Safe Kids Canada has a DVD on child car seats and booster seats. You can download the videos from the DVD here.

The 60 Second Driver series from Manitoba Public Insurance and CTV provides useful information for those wanting to improve their driving and road safety skills.
